Rockstar released the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto VIin December 2023. It was a YouTube exclusive and immediately became one of the biggest video launches in the platform’s history.
What the trailer showed
The reveal opens on Lucia speaking with what looks like a corrections official, then leaving a Leonida facility — where Jasonis waiting for her. From there it’s a rapid tour of the state:
- Vice City— neon streets, beaches, and nightlife, Rockstar’s take on Miami.
- Wetlands — airboats, flamingos taking off, and alligators, including one wandering into a store.
- Modern-Florida satire— influencer culture, police bodycam footage, and sun-baked roadside chaos that sets the game’s tone.
Shown vs. proven
Trailer 1 establishes the setting, tone, and the two leads — that much is on screen. It is a cinematic trailer, not a feature list.
Why it mattered
Beyond the record-breaking view counts, Trailer 1 set the tone for GTA VI: a neon, sun-soaked return to Vice City, told through the eyes of two partners on the wrong side of the law. The second trailer built on it two years later.
