Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look is out. It premiered on Netflix on August 27, 2026 and went up free on Rockstar’s YouTube channel and rockstargames.com/VI at 9 p.m. ET the same evening. It runs 26 minutes and 48 seconds, and Rockstar says every frame was captured in-game on a PlayStation 5. The launch date did not move: November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The question we left open is now answered
When Rockstar dated this video on August 6, it described nothing about the contents. We said at the time that calling it a gameplay reveal was expectation, not confirmation, and our announcement coverage held that line while most headlines did not.
The answer arrived with the video. Rockstar’s own wording — “captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5” — settles the engine question outright. What it does notsettle is how much of the 26 minutes was played versus directed. Rockstar never uses the words “gameplay demo,” and no one has been given hands-on time. “In-game footage” is the honest description, and it is already a much stronger claim than anything attached to the first two trailers.
What Rockstar put in writing
Five things are stated by Rockstar or a first-party storefront, and can be checked in a minute:
| Fact | First-party source |
|---|---|
| Premiered August 27, 2026; free on YouTube and rockstargames.com/VI | Rockstar Newswire, August 27 |
| Captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5 | Rockstar Newswire and the official Extended Look page |
| Runs 26 minutes 48 seconds | Rockstar's official YouTube upload |
| Launch remains November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S | Rockstar Newswire, August 27 |
| PS5 Pro Enhanced; Tempest 3D Audio, DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers | PlayStation US product page |
| Not playable on PlayStation 4 | PlayStation US product page |
The video’s YouTube description adds a line the Newswire post does not: “Grand Theft Auto VI plays best on PlayStation 5.”Read that alongside the PS5-only capture, the PS5 Pro Enhanced badge on PlayStation’s own store page, and the playstation.com/GTAVIfeatureslink Rockstar now points at from the official GTA VI site, and the shape of a PlayStation marketing partnership is visible. That is our read, not a Rockstar statement — but the Xbox Series X|S version has no equivalent showcase, and it launches the same day.
It is still not Trailer 3
This is small and it keeps mattering. On Rockstar’s own Extended Look page, the “watch more” rail lists Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 2 (2:47, May 6, 2025) and Grand Theft Auto VI Trailer 1(1:31, December 4, 2023) with their numbers intact. The Extended Look sits above them with a name and no number. Rockstar’s media library counts three official videos and numbers two of them.
So “Trailer 3” is a useful search term and a fair piece of shorthand. It is not the video’s title, and anyone telling you Rockstar released Trailer 3 is reporting the shorthand back to you as fact.
What the footage shows
Everything in this section is observation of an officially published video, not a confirmed feature list. Rockstar published the footage; it did not publish a feature breakdown, and it has not answered questions about any of it.
The video follows Jason and Lucia across Leonida rather than cutting a montage. Reporters working from the same footage catalogued a consistent set of things: Push Square’s Liam Croft and Stephen Tailby list prompt-based NPC conversations, instant character switching when the two are together, cover-based shooting with free aim, a slow-motion targeting ability, a returning six-star wanted level, a wanted-evasion system that reacts to changing your outfit, a 3D minimap, and a long tail of side activities — racing, jet skis, scuba diving, basketball.
The three things it did not announce
Absences are worth as much as reveals this close to launch, and all three of these were widely predicted:
- No PC.No version, no window, no mention. Rockstar’s post names PS5 and Xbox Series X|S and stops. Our GTA VI on PC page is unchanged for a reason.
- No GTA Online successor detail. The video is single-player-facing throughout. Rockstar has still said nothing substantive about online for GTA VI.
- No preload date. Nothing in the announcement touches preload, file size, or launch timing.
What this changes for you
Practically, not much — and that is the useful finding. The date, the platforms, the price, and the editions are all where they were on August 26. What changed is the evidence base: for the first time there are 26 minutes of engine footage on retail hardware, which makes the game far easier to judge and makes the remaining silence around PC and online more conspicuous, not less.
Our full breakdown of the video lives on the Trailer 3 / Extended Look page, which stays the page we maintain as more is confirmed. For the whole verified picture, see every confirmed GTA VI fact.
